Press Release, April 2000 (Issued from St. Martin's Press) LIVING MIRACLES is a ray of hope that will help guide parents through their own premature birth experience. Thirty years ago babies born prematurely had slim chances of survival. Today, due to modern medicine's inventions and achievements preemies now have a much higher survival rate. Yet, giving birth and parenting a premature baby is still one of the most physically and emotionally traumatic experiences a parent could face. LIVING MIRACLES: Stories of Hope from Parents of Premature Babies is a collection of real-life stories of the struggles, emotional upheavals, and triumphs during the first years of a preemie's life. The parents wrote all the heartfelt stories in LIVING MIRACLES themselves, some from the mother's perspective and others from the father's. In LIVING MIRACLES readers will learn about the vast spectrum of emotions and experiences that flood in when a mother gives birth to a premature baby. During the horrifyingly difficult first months of their child's life, parents can have bouts of panic, grief, helplessness, blame, and depression. Now, in frank detail, parents of more than 20 premature babies who survived their ordeals share their ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies, and reveal who they turned to for love, help, and inspiration. The stories are organized by the weeks' gestation of each baby at birth, from 23 to 35 weeks and begins with inspirational snapshots of their child both "then" and "now." LIVING MIRACLES also includes a glossary of premature baby medical terms, such as NICU, or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and "Kangaroo Care." Samuel Warren: Samuel was born at 1 pound 8 ounces when his mother went into preterm labor. His parents had endured nine years of infertility treatments and miscarriages. While Samuel has some speech delays and swallowing problems, he is rapidly improving and is a happy two-and-a-half year old. Bo Smith: Bo was conceived after a miscarriage. He frightened his mother when she began to abort him spontaneously due to an antibody disorder. Bo proved he was a miracle by growing from 1 pound 3 ounces and 8 inches long, to being the light of his parents' life at one year old. Sara Stromseth: Now a twenty-one-year-old college student, Sara was only 1 pound 15 ounces at birth due to her mother's incompetent cervix. Sara truly is a miracle because she was born before advances in neonatology. Each parent tell their families narrative from the heart. The stories in LIVING MIRACLES are moving, uplifting, and authentic. It's a perfect inspiration for new parents of preemies. About the Editors Kim Wilson was introduced to motherhood in October 1993 when she gave birth to her son prematurely. She is a full-time freelance writer residing in New Jersey.
