About Kimberly A. Powell

When I became the mother of a premature daughter in March of 1997 I found a new calling. I want to help other parents who find themselves in the similar unexpected, yet eventually rewarding, circumstance of being a preemie parent. Since my daughter’s birth I have spent time visiting the NICU, engaging in online preemie support groups, and publicly speaking on the preemie experience. Most recently, in June of 1998, my daughter was featured, and I was interviewed, on local news casts as a preemie success story. I use my daughter’s success to help others by serving as a volunteer for the American Association of Premature Infants and a member of the HELLP Syndrome Society.

Professionally, I earned my Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Georgia in 1992. I am an Associate Professor and Department Head of the Communication/Linguistics Department at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. In addition to teaching courses in public speaking, argumentation and rhetoric, I have published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Communication Studies, Communication Quarterly, and The Speech Communication Teacher.  I also serve as associate editor for Communication Studies, The Iowa Journal of Communication, and Speaker and Gavel, and as a guest editor for Women’s Studies in Communication.

Personally, in addition to spending time with my family, I enjoy gardening, playing racquetball, and practicing tae kwon do. I earned my first-degree black belt in 1995, after which I began instructing in our local American Tae Kwon Do Association club.
