Paul's Story
Submitted by his mom: Sue Potma

On Tuesday, July 24, 2001, my biggest concern was returning to work after an extended weekend of bed rest which my family doctor had ordered due to the condition of pre-eclampsia. I obviously did not realize the seriousness of the situation. That Tuesday morning my husband and I made our way to the doctor as scheduled for a blood pressure check. As my doctor took my blood pressure I realized by the look on her face that things had progressed over the weekend and bed rest was obviously not the answer to a serious situation. She wasted no time in sending me straight to the hospital where I spent the rest of the day and night in fetal assessment.

On the morning of Wed, July 25, 2001, I underwent an extensive ultrasound which showed that our baby was very small and needed to be delivered. After two other ultrasounds for confirmation and many tears we were taken to labour and delivery where I underwent an emergency c-section at only 30 weeks' gestation—perhaps the most devastating and shocking event of my entire life! Paul Andrew Anthonie was born at 6:50 p.m. weighing only 2 pounds. My husband and I were filled with so many emotions! Our rollercoaster of emotions continued as Paul spent 2 very long months in the NICU under the expertise of some amazing doctors and nurses! He of course suffered from severe IUGR and apnea of prematurity. Paul came home at 4 pounds, 12 ounces and has since only needed a fairly straightforward surgery for right inaugul hernia. We are so blessed that Paul is now a 14 pound 7-month-old baby boy who is progressing nicely both physically and developmentally.

I am so thankful that we had an amazing family doctor who realized the seriousness of my situation. I believe that had it not been for her expertise and the graciousness of God Paul would not be alive today! He is truly a miracle and we thank God for him!
