Far Away From the Ballfields; But Winning Our Own Game
by Kelly Feevey

During my childhood, I always dreamt that I would someday be a mother. I pictured myself dressing my daughter in frilly, lacey little dresses. I imagined us out picking flowers and as she grew up, talking "girl talk" and being best friends like my mother and I.

My husband and I found out at our 30 week ultrasound that we were expecting a boy. We were surprised and excited. I always thought that I would have a girl. My dreams of frilly dresses, and bow tied hair turned to that of ballgames, hockey and dirtbikes. We talked about all of the things that our boy would be able to do. We talked about all of our hopes for him.

Just hours after that ultrasound, I was hospitalized with the diagnosis of severe preeclampsia. I could not believe it. I was on strict bedrest to try to keep my blood pressure down. Only five days later our son was born.

At only 30 weeks were told that our son had a "good chance" of survival. We were told he had a 90% chance to survive. Survive. This did not take into consideration any physical or mental handicaps he could have.

Our NICU stay was relatively short. We had the normal ups and downs that preemie parents endure, A's and B's, feeding issues, hyperbilirubinemia, and respiratory distress syndrome.

After 28 days in the NICU, we were able to bring our son home. He was growing and able to nurse effectively and was discharged on an apnea monitor. We were still far from the ballfields but winning our own game.
